Homemade Craft Supplies
Papier Mache
Supplies You Will Need:
- Newspaper
- 1/2 cup of Flour
- Large Spoonful of salt
- 1 cup of Warm Water
Instructions
Tear some newspaper into strips. Most projects need strips about
1 inch wide. Paper has a grain. Tear it one way and it will
tear straight and evenly; tear it the other way and it's a mess.
Mix up paste by putting the flour and salt in a bowl.
The salt will help to keep the paste from going moldy. Add the warm
water to the flour and salt. Mix it with your hands. It should be
like thick, creamy soup. Add more flour to thicken it or more water to
thin it. Spread paste on a section of your project. Lay a strip of
newspaper on the pasty area. Spread paste on the strip. Lay a second
strip overlapping the first one. Spread more paste on the second strip.
Continue until the whole project is covered with 43 paper-and-paste layers.
To prevent print from the newspaper showing through your paint,
add a layer of blank newsprint. Blank newsprint can be bought in pads
or in cheap scrapbooks. For some projects,
it's easier to dip a newspaper strip in the paste first, removing the
excess paste by pulling it through your fingers. Drying can take at
least one day. You can tell if the project is dry by touch. If it feels
cool, it needs more time. Found this in Papier-Mache For Kids by Sheila
McGraw.
